Greening RUN 350

Because of your suggestions, we are implementing the following new measures for NTUC Income RUN 350 2014

1. Race Entry Pack Collection

a. Process of race pack collection is now paperless. There's no need to print out confirmation slips. Participants will only need to produce their photo ID to do the collection.
b. Indemnity by participants is now done online and is now paperless as well.
c. NTUC Income RUN 350 Race Handbook is now in e-copy, as compared to the past years.
d. We have encouraged sponsors to include their marketing message in the race handbook or to be printed on paper of sustainable sources (e.g. FSC certified).

2. Event Day

a. Bicycle racks will be provided on race day for runners who wished to cycle to the event (approximately 200 lots).
b. Constant announcements will be made during the event to remind runners to not litter and to sort the trash by disposing them in the right trash collection points.

3. After NTUC Income RUN 350

a. Runners' experience survey for NTUC Income RUN 350. Inviting participants to give feasible suggestions to make NTUC Income RUN 350 a greener run and a better experience..

4. On-going / upcoming eco activities runners can be part of

a. Medal recycling

Past measures to be continued for 2013

The run is named "NTUC Income RUN 350" to remind people the critical amount of carbon emission in the atmosphere we should strive for to ensure our survivability as humankind.

Combining with the fun and joy of running, we want to create awareness among the public through our message that even with a simple change of our lifestyle, we can collectively contribute into achieving this target. And for the same reason, we want this run, compared to any others done here in Singapore to have low environmental footprints.

We are doing the best we can while in consultation with our green partners, NTUC Income RUN 350 supporters and our stakeholders, to balance between ensuring the participants to have a good time and minimizing our environmental impact at the same time.

Our measures can be simplified into the following categories:

1. Waste:

Awareness creation and registration for NTUC Income RUN 350 are primarily done through the internet to reduce the amount of paper that will potentially be used.

The banners can be churned into other useful products such as bags or reusable carriers which would be opened for bidding or sales as collector's item, of which funds raised (after covering the manufacturing cost) can be donated to a good cause.

Items in the race entry packs are selected based on their usefulness, so that they will be utilized and we hope that this will minimize the potential wastage. Items are also packed into the shoebags and no plastic carriers will be issued during race entry pack collection.

During the event day, the trash will be separated into the following categories to facilitate proper disposal:

• Plastic bottles
• Paper cups
• Others trash

2. Water:

Instead of having individual 300ml to 500ml bottles, water will be poured from 1.5 litre bottles into paper cups at the water stations to minimize the use of bottled water.

Isotonic drinks will come in the form of cordials instead of in cans or bottles.

Paper cups will be provided instead of plastic cups.

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles with them to NTUC Income RUN 350.

3. Energy:

Efforts are put into planning of routes for logistical transportation in advance in order to reduce the amount of unnecessary trips as much as possible to save fuel.

Biodiesel is insisted, instead of regular diesel, to be used to fuel the power generator powering NTUC Income RUN 350.

Participants of NTUC Income RUN 350 are strongly encouraged to travel via public transportation, shuttle bus service provided or even ride a bicycle to the event instead of driving. If driving is unavoidable, participants are encouraged to make car pool arrangements to maximise the usage of the car.

Shuttle buses are arranged to shuttle many participants at one go to the race location and will only be arranged if there's a sizeable demand.

4. Biodiversity:

Through NTUC Income RUN 350, a portion of the proceeds will be going towards the Plant-A-Tree Programme to plant more trees in Singapore where they are needed most.

5. Awareness:

On-going activities are done to get NTUC Income RUN 350's participants to join in and help get more green acts going. The sessions also serve to create awareness about the small yet sustainable actions we can take to reduce our impact on the environment we all live in.

The activities include:
• Green movie screenings and discussions
• Dialogue sessions
• Hands on activities (tree planting, coastal clean-ups, workshops etc)

Runners would have access to green related information via our green partner, ECO Singapore's newsletter, "ECO Blips", to get them to learn more about environmental issues and opportunities to volunteer with the local environment scene.

Collaterals of NTUC Income RUN 350, like posters and flyers, are printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper made from sustainable and recycled sources. *Click HERE to know more about FSC.
